NEA going after merit pay

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) put an amendment on a spending bill for additional money for merit pay grants.  The teachers' unions are working to defeat it, which is nothing new.  But this time around, it is kind of funny--witness the letter he got from the NEA:

DEAR SENATOR ALEXANDER:we urge you to vote NO on … An amendment to be offered by Senator Alexander (R-TN) that would provide $99 million for the Teacher Incentive Fund

Alexander discussed this on the Senate floor yesterday:

I thought the unions were supposed to argue for pay raises for their members rather than work to defeat them...
